What is spay & neuter—and why it’s recommended
Spay (for females) and neuter (for males) are routine procedures that prevent unplanned litters and help reduce hormonally driven behaviors. Beyond family planning and community impact, many pets enjoy an easier, more settled life after surgery. Your Ivy Pets veterinarian will tailor recommendations to your pet’s age, breed, lifestyle, and overall health.
Benefits can include:
Preventing unplanned litters and helping reduce shelter crowding
Curbing roaming, marking/spraying, and mating-related behaviors
Allowing your pet to focus on play, training, and bonding at home
Supporting a longer-term wellness plan customized to your pet

Local and systemic pain control
Warm, supervised recovery
Home-care instructions and an e-collar alternative recommendation (cone or recovery garment)

When should I schedule my pet’s surgery?
The ideal timing depends on species, breed/size, medical history, and lifestyle. Many pets are scheduled in late puppy/kittenhood; large-breed dogs may benefit from different timing. We’ll discuss your pet’s unique plan during the pre-op visit so you can feel confident in the schedule.
How surgery day works
1) Check-in
We confirm your pet’s exam findings, review the plan, and answer last-minute questions. You’ll receive clear pick-up timing and contact info.
2) Tailored anesthesia & procedure
Your veterinarian performs the surgery with continuous monitoring and temperature support. We’ll text/call with an update when your pet is in recovery.
3) Same-day discharge
Most pets go home the same day once they’re comfortable and awake. We’ll review at-home instructions, medications, and what normal recovery looks like.
Home recovery & aftercare
Plan for a quiet, cozy setup for about two weeks:
Activity: Short, controlled activity only; avoid running, jumping, or rough play.
Incision care: Keep the area clean and dry; no bathing or swimming until we clear it.
Cone/garment: Leave on as directed to prevent licking or chewing.
Medications: Give pain meds exactly as prescribed—don’t use human medications.
Check-ins: Reach out if you notice swelling, discharge, missing sutures, or if your pet seems uncomfortable.
We’re here for you—send us a photo or call if anything looks off.
Pricing & estimates
We believe in transparent, personalized estimates based on species, sex, age, weight, and any recommended diagnostics or add-ons (e.g., bloodwork, microchip). Share a few details about your pet and we’ll provide a clear estimate upfront—no surprises.
Is my pet a candidate?
Most healthy dogs and cats are great candidates for spay or neuter. We’ll review your pet’s medical history, perform a physical exam, and recommend any pre-anesthetic testing to ensure the safest approach.
Add a microchip while your pet is asleep
A microchip is a quick, permanent ID that links your pet back to you. It’s an easy add-on while your pet is already under anesthesia.
Will my pet’s personality change?
Your pet should still be themselves. You may notice fewer mating-related behaviors over time, but the cuddly, playful personality you love should remain.
How long is recovery?
Plan for restricted activity and protective wear for about 10–14 days. We’ll tell you exactly when your pet is cleared to resume normal play, walks, and bathing.
Can my pet eat before surgery?
We’ll give you precise fasting instructions based on your pet’s age and medical needs at the pre-op visit. Always follow the guidelines we provide.
What if my pet is in heat or recently was?
Timing matters; we’ll advise the safest window for surgery during your consultation.
Do you offer bloodwork or IV fluids?
Yes. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork and IV support are commonly recommended and can be added to your pet’s plan.
