Why vaccinate?

Vaccines prime your pet’s immune system to fight specific viruses and bacteria before they get sick. In a busy city like New York, routine shots also meet local requirements—for example, New York State law mandates rabies vaccination for dogs and cats, with the first shot by four months of age and a booster within one year.

Keeping your pet’s vaccines up to date not only safeguards them but also prevents zoonotic diseases from spreading to people.

Core Vaccines for Dogs in NYC

Rabies

Protects against a fatal virus transmitted by wildlife; required by New York State. Initial dose is given by four months of age with boosters as needed.

DHPP (Distemper/Parvovirus/Parainfluenza/Adenovirus)

A combination vaccine that guards against common, serious canine diseases.

Leptospirosis

We treat Lepto as core for New York City dogs due to citywide risk from rat-contaminated water and updated expert guidance recommending annual vaccination for all dogs. NYC Health reports canine leptospirosis throughout the city and advises asking your vet about vaccination. Recent guidance covered by AVMA and AAHA/ACVIM recommends vaccinating all dogs annually.

Optional vaccines

Depending on your dog’s activities and environment, we may recommend Bordetella (kennel cough), Lyme disease, or Canine Influenza. These protect dogs that frequent parks, daycare, grooming salons or travel to wooded areas.

Core Vaccines for Cats in NYC

Rabies

New York State requires all cats to be vaccinated by four months of age, with a booster within a year. Proof of vaccination is important if your cat ever bites someone or travels.

FVRCP

A three‑in‑one shot that protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia—highly contagious viruses that can affect respiratory and digestive systems.

Optional vaccines

Based on your cat’s risk factors, we may suggest FeLV (feline leukemia virus) or vaccines for Bordetella, Chlamydophila felis, or feline immunodeficiency virus.

When to vaccinate

  • Puppies & kittens. Vaccinations start as early as 6–8 weeks for kittens and 8–12 weeks for puppies, with boosters until adolescent immunity is achieved.

  • Adults. Booster schedules vary by vaccine and your pet’s health status; some are annual and others every three years. We’ll build a calendar and send reminders.

  • Behind on shots? We’ll help you catch up safely. If your pet’s vaccine history is unknown, we may recommend starting a series or running titer tests.

What’s included at Ivy Pets

Each vaccine appointment includes:

  • A consultation and nose‑to‑tail exam

  • A customized vaccine plan (core and lifestyle)

  • Gentle vaccine administration with plenty of treats

  • Digital record keeping and booster reminders

  • Optional add‑ons like microchipping, parasite prevention or bloodwork

How the visit works

1) Check‑in & review. We update your pet’s history, discuss lifestyle and concerns, then confirm which vaccines are due.
2) Exam & vaccinations. Your veterinarian performs a quick wellness exam and administers vaccines using low‑stress techniques.
3) Wrap‑up & records. You receive updated digital records and aftercare instructions. We’ll book your next booster if needed.

Pricing & estimates

Costs depend on your pet’s species, age, vaccine selections and whether we bundle services. Share some details and we’ll provide a clear estimate before we begin—no surprises.

Is my pet a candidate?

In most cases, yes. We’ll review your pet’s medical history and any prior vaccine reactions to ensure we choose the safest approach. If your pet is ill on the day of the appointment, we may recommend delaying until they’re feeling better.

Why Ivy Pets?

  • Tailored protection. We recommend only the vaccines your pet truly needs based on their age, lifestyle, and medical history.

  • Low‑stress visits. Our team uses fear‑free techniques, treats, and positive reinforcement to make vaccination easy on sensitive pets.

  • Transparent guidance. You’ll leave with digital records, reminders for boosters, and answers to all your questions.

  • Experienced team. Our doctors vaccinate city pets every day and keep up with the latest veterinary guidelines.

  • One‑stop convenience. Combine vaccines with wellness exams, parasite prevention, microchipping or a nail trim so fewer trips are needed.

Core vaccines protect against widespread or severe diseases and are recommended for nearly all pets. Optional (lifestyle) vaccines are recommended based on exposure—think daycare, boarding, dog parks, travel, outdoor access, or regional risks.

Timing varies by vaccine, age, and prior history. We’ll outline a personalized schedule and send reminders so nothing gets missed.

Indoor pets can still be exposed to certain diseases (through air, people, or a surprise escape). We’ll keep protection minimal but meaningful for your situation.

Usually yes. We commonly pair vaccines with wellness exams, microchipping, and preventive care to reduce visits.

Tell us exactly what happened. We can adjust the plan, pre-medicate if appropriate, or space out vaccines to keep your pet comfortable.

Absolutely—your digital records will include vaccine dates and product details. We can also help you prepare any certificates you might need.

At Ivy Pets, Leptospirosis is considered a core vaccine for NYC dogs because of local risk and current expert guidance—even though only rabies is mandated by law.
